There are a few less expensive options than the "Icom T2H Sport" and
many more expensive:
Icom IC-V8 is low cost, but an extremely reliable and rugged unit.
Icom IC-T90 is a very complex but cool radio that can pick up almost
anything from 100KHz to 1GHz -- meaning AM, FM, TV, Weather, Police, HAM,
etc...
Icom IC-W32A is a cool one too. It is dual-band and can transmit in
both the business band (what we use) and the aircraft band (what aircraft
use), which is important when operating at an airport.
If you decide to buy, ensure you get the charging cables you'd like. The
units are likely to come with a slow charger for home use. Having a
cigarette lighter charger is *really* nice! And, lastly, when looking,
you will want to consider if there is a "mod" for the unit. The term "mod"
stands for modification. The radio manufacturers are limited in the
frequencies they can allow you to transmit and still sell their units to
unlicensed folks like most of us. But, they typically make the process of
modification to transmit on a much larger spectrum of frequencies VERY
easy (like clipping 3 little parts behind a sticker in the battery
compartment with finger nail clippers). This is important to us because it
allows us to operate in the radio bands provided to us by the federal
government (it has to do with one of those weird overlaps of laws that
actually contradict each other). |

Preflight Checklist |
We highly recommend all pilots
develop and use a pre-flight checklist prior to taking each flight – it’s
easy, it’s fast, and it could save your life. We all get in a hurry
sometimes, but preparing for flight is not the time to do so. It really is
worth the 20 extra seconds you spend on launch. If you're set up to turn the
wrong way, if you forget to connect your leg straps, if your reserve is
deployed in a turn while flying… these and other critical details can each
be fatal. Although pilots may use whichever checklist suits them, here is a
basic and simple one you may consider using:
5-STAR2 Checklist
(pronounced "Five Star Squared")
5 -- 5 seconds of chillin’/self-evaluation time
4 -- 4 corners of the
glider
3 -- 3 buckles
2 -- 2 carabiners
1 -- 1 chin strap
S -- Stirrup
S -- Speed-bar
T -- Turn direction
T -- Tow bridle
A -- Attitude
(how do I feel)
A -- Attitude (is this acceptably safe)
R -- Reserve
pins and handle
R -- Radio check |
